Helen Hayes, age 88, of Clear Lake, S.D. died on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2007 at the Sanford Hospital Deuel County in Clear Lake, SD. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Oct. 17, 2007 at the Highland Lutheran Church in Brandt, S.D. Rev. Carlene Rhody officiated.
Burial was in the Lakeview Cemetery in Clear Lake, S.D. Visitation was on Oct. 16 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Houseman-Eng Funeral Home in Clear Lake, S.D. and resumed Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Helen was born Dec. 14, 1918 to Theodore and Marie (Buchholtz) Hansen on the family farm near Altamont, S.D. She was raised there and attended school in Altamont. Following her education, she helped on the family farm.
On Jan. 16, 1944, Helen was united in marriage to Woodrow “Red” Hayes in Clear Lake, S.D. Following their marriage, they lived in Clear Lake, S.D.
In 1945, they moved to Bemis, S.D. and later moved to Canby, Minn. They settled in Brandt, S.D. where they lived for 39 years where she worked various jobs throughout the years.
She also babysat many children in the Brandt area. In 1994, they moved into Clear Lake, S.D. On Nov. 13, 2005 her husband “Red” died. She continued living in her home in Clear Lake, S.D.
She was preceded in death by her husband Woodrow “Red” Hayes, parents and one brother, Les Hansen and three sisters: Marion Stevens, Dorothy Odland, and Marlene Holborn.
She is survived by her two sons: Henry (Ruth) Hayes, Cherokee, and Bob Hayes, Clear Lake, S.D.; one brother, Lee Hansen, Altamont, S.D.; and three brothers-in-law: Bob Holborn, Watertown, S.D., Walter (Mary) Hayes, Brookings, S.D. and Jim Hayes, Los Angeles, Calif.
