The Cherokee Police Department and the Cherokee Police Reserves have started their annual drive for the "Toys for Tots" program.
Children from Cherokee County from infancy to 14 who are identified by Mid-Sioux Opportunity as from needy families will attend a Christmas party on Dec. 8.
A meal will be served and Santa Claus will make an appearance to hand out toys and clothing items such as hats and gloves.
Steve Schuck, police chief, said that this year there will be an effort to provide coats for those most in need.
The Toys for Tots effort totally depends on the generosity of local people. No government funding is provided for this program.
Checks or toys may be dropped off at the Cherokee Police Department or mailed to the police department at 111 North Fifth Street, Cherokee IA 51012.
