RV loses Regional Final; winner to state

IDA GROVE - A tough Manning volleyball squad, a state qualifier last year with all starters returning for this season, defeated River Valley's courageous girls 3-0 in a Regional Final here Tuesday night, by game scores of 25-20, 25-13, 25-22.

The win sends Manning back to the state tournament in Cedar Rapids.

"This was a tough match to lose," said RV coach Marlene Baumann. "We really came together as a team the past three weeks. All of our seniors are very special. They have played varsity for three to four years and are great leaders."

Those graduating RV seniors include setter Katie Carnes, a four-year starter; outside hitter Alissa Slota, a four-year starter; outside hitter Jody Peterson, a three-year starter; defensive specialist Trish Todd; and outside hitter Sara Zahnley, team leader and "team coach," according to Baumann.

Emily Todd led the Wolverines in attacks with a 25-32 night and 10 kills, followed by Slota 17-17 and six kills, Peterson 15-21 and seven kills, and Kaylea Simons 9-12 and three kills. Emily Todd also led in blocks with three assists and one solo, while Simons had two assists and a solo, and Tonya Johnson two assists and one solo.

Carnes and Johnson led RV servers with a 10-10 efforts, while Peterson was 9-10, Emily Todd 8-9, and Charlee Brewer and Slota each 7-8.

Carnes led in set assists with 23, while Slota had eight digs to lead that department, followed by Brewer with seven, and Emily Todd and Carnes six apiece.
