Art Eide of Cherokee was finally recognized for his heroic service to his country, more than 60 years after the event. The 87-year-old lifelong Cherokee resident recently received the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart from the United States Defense Department. Eide went into the Army in 1942 and was serving in Europe during the Battle of the Bulge, Germany's last offensive during WW II. Eide was seriously injured during the battle. He and his late wife, Evelyn, had a son and a daughter, both still living in the area. Art Eide has12 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Photo by Ken Ross
