Former Cherokean run over by semi in Le Mars

Monday, November 12, 2007

Edward Kern Jones, 58, of Le Mars, formerly of Cherokee, died from injuries sustained from a traffic accident on Saturday afternoon Nov. 3, according to the Le Mars Police Department.

According to police reports, a west bound semi tractor/trailer driven by Kevin Heissel, 43, Le Mars, was stopped for a red light at the intersection of Plymouth Street East and Central Avenue at about 2:30 p.m.

While the traffic was stopped, Jones was attempting to exit the alley on the north side of Plymouth Street East and began to cross the street by crawling under the empty grain trailer of the semi truck.

The traffic light turned green for east-west traffic, the police department said, when Jones was caught underneath the trailer and consequently run over by the tires of the trailer.

Jones was transported to Floyd Valley Hospital by Le Mars Ambulance. He was later pronounced dead at Sioux City's Mercy Medical Center.

Jones was a 1968 graduate of Washington High School in Cherokee.
