Local girl joins Moscow Ballet for Nutcracker

Monday, November 19, 2007

Elizabeth "Libby" Peterson
This weekend the Moscow Ballet Company will be performing the Great Russian ballet "The Nutcracker" at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City. Among the cast members will be local girl Elizabeth "Libby" Peterson, the daughter of John and Karen Peterson of Cherokee. The ten-year-old middle school student will be playing one of the two Russian girls in Tschaikovsky's opera. Peterson got the role by answering an opening casting call on the radio. Libby and her mother went to the audition on Oct. 12 in Sioux City and she got the part and started practices right away. Moscow Ballet dancer Boris Baskakove led auditions and taught 46 young area dancers, ranging from first graders to ninth graders, how to dance their parts. He then hand-picked those he thought would be best for the parts. Peterson has been practicing several times over the last couple of weeks in Sioux City at Sandy Keane's Dance Studio. She may be only 10 years old , but she has been involved with dance since she was four. Peterson said that working with Baskakove has been a big honor and she has learned a lot but it was hard because "he didn't speak very good English." She also added that the best part so far has been working with the other girls and making a lot of new friends. "My friends think it's really cool," said Libby. "and they have been real supportive of me. So has my family."

Peterson will dance in two performances of the Nutcracker at the Orpheum Theater on Sunday, the first at 3 p.m. and the other at 7: 30 p.m. Sioux City is one of 70 stops the Moscow Ballet is making this holiday season to present the ballet.

Elizabeth "Libby" Peterson of Cherokee will be joining the cast of the Moscow Ballet to bring the great Russian ballet "The Nutcracker" to life at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City on Nov. 18.
