EMMETSBURG - The Cherokee Washington High girls dropped a close 31-28 game at Emmetsburg Friday night after leading at all the stops except the final one.
Cherokee eked out to a 6-1 lead after the first quarter in the defensive struggle, led 15-10 at halftime, and 21-19 after three frames, before the host E-Hawks outscored the WHS club 12-7 in the fourth stanza for the Lakes Conference win.
Lacie Drennan led Cherokee's scoring with 11 points, followed by Jesselyn Racine nine, Alison Husman four, and Misty Bruhn three.
"We played extraordinary defense for about 27 minutes," said first-year Cherokee coach Jeremy Dettmer. "We had the lead until the very end, but were never able to pull away from Emmetsburg when we had the chance.
"We have to give Emmetsburg credit, they did a great job of slowing us down and not letting us run."
