River Valley girls win; boys lose
MAPLETON - The River Valley basketball teams split a pair of Maple Valley Conference games agaiinst Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto here Friday night, the RV girls winning the opener 40-29, and the RV boys falling 64-56 in the nightcap.
Alissa Slota led the Wolverines to victory in the girls game with 11 points and 10 rebounds for a nifty double-double. Charlee Brewer pocketed nine rebounds for the winners.
Katie Crilly led the host Rams in scoring with eight points. MVAO led 9-7 after one quarter, trailed 14-12 at halftime and 24-20 after three frames, before RV outscored the Rams 16-9 down the stretch to seal the deal.
River Valley meshed 12-23 free throws, to a 7-25 effort by the Rams.
"We played well defensively," said RV coach Terry Jensen. "We missed a few easy shots and layups, but that will improve. We also shot free throws better."
In the boys game, MVAO outscored the Wolverines 35-30 in the second half to salt the win away, after leading 29-26 at halftime.
Anthony Volkert led the RV scoring with a game-high 20 points, while Austin Hansen added 14, and Zach Hullinger 11. Hansen also led in rebounds with six and Pat Parcel and Samuel Lundt each dished out four assists. Volkert grabbed five rebounds and Ethan Todd four.
River Valley shot a warm 51 percent from the field, sinking 21-41 field goals. The Wolverines made 11-16 free throws.
"We lost a hard-fought battle," said RV coach Dean Norris. "Several calls went against us that I felt were a huge difference in the game."
