Aurelia boys fall 78-27 to top-ranked Cyclones
ALTA- The Aurelia Bulldog teams made the short trip to Alta for a pair of Northwest Conference basketball games on Dec. 7, and unfortunately for them, had no victories to celebrate on the return trip.
In the opener, the Bulldog girls were tied at 13 after the first quarter, but trailed by 10 at the half, 31-21. The second half saw Alta lead by as many as 19 points at one juncture in the third quarter. The Bulldogs had closed the gap to 11 by the end of the quarter, but never got any closer,
as the game finished with a 59-42 score, in favor of the Cyclones.
Individually, Bulldog freshman Meghan Glawe continued her stellar play, scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 boards. Leah Kai led the Bulldogs in scoring with 15, and also had five assists, three steals, four rebounds, and two blocks. Tiffany Johnson had six rebounds and three steals to go with her three points. Erin Laursen had seven rebounds and a steal to go with her four points.
Alta was led in scoring by Jordan Henningsen with 22 points.
In the boys' game, Aurelia coach Grant Peckenschneider summed up the game succintly: "Plain and simple, we got beat by a much better team." The Bulldogs were down 14-7 after the first quarter, but Alta, rated No. 1 in Class 1A, hit some big three-pointers in the second quarter and opened up their offense, outscoring the 'Dogs 22-2 in the quarter to take a 46-9 halftime lead.
Peckenschneider said Aurelia "couldn't get anything going - they played up in our face and we didn't attack enough. Their post players played well." The final score of the Northwest Conference game was Alta 78, Aurelia 27. Aaron Bruce led the Bulldogs in scoring with nine points.
