HINTON - Akron-Westfield captured the team title of the 2007-2008 War Eagle Conference Wrestling Tournament here Tuesday night, amassing a 4-0 record in the five-team tourney.
Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn finished second with a 3-1 mark, followed by Sergeant Bluff-Luton 2-2, West Sioux 1-3, and Hinton 0-4.
The champion Westerners beat Hinton 49-20, West Sioux 57-24, SB-L 39-36, and MMC 50-24.
MMC beat SB-L 37-33, Hinton 36-33, West Sioux 43-36, and lost 50-24 to A-W.
The Eagles featured two champions in Russ Godbersen at 135 pounds, and Ben Mayer at 140. Godbersen and Mayer each won their titles with two falls, a 5-2 decision, and a bye.
Placing second for MMC were Jacob Lehnhoff at 125, Blaine Dammann at 145, Luke Dreckman at 215, and Dan Holmes at heavyweight. Also wrestling some matches at 130, Lehnhoff pinned four opponents on his way to runner-up finish. Dammann won by a 20-6 decision, a bye, and a fall, before getting pinned in the finals. Dreckman won two matches by fall, and one on an 11-8 decision before being pinned in the finals. Holmes won one match by fall, and one on a bye, before being pinned twice in the final two rounds.
Jerad Letsche at 160, and Jeff Tentinger at 130 placed third. Letsche won on a 12-2 decision and a 9-1 decision, was pinned in the third round, and lost 17-2 in the final round. Tentinger won 13-3, received a bye, and was pinned in the final round.
Blake Erdman was fourth at 119 pounds, as was Taylor Witzel at 152.
Individual medals were earned by the top three finishers in each weight class.
Coaches Steve Phillips and Rod Schneider summed up the night by saying, "The few, the proud, the determined!
"It's just amazing what we did her tonight with the numbers we had to work with. Our hard work is paying off," added Phillips.
MMC wrestles in the Paul Fuhrman Invitational Saturday in Cherokee.
