Toni E. McGowan-Johnikin
Toni E. McGowan-Johnikin, 41,of Cherokee, passed away Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007 at the St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, following a three year battle with cancer.
Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 4 at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. The Rev. Floyd Brown officiated. Burial was in the St. Mary's Cemetery at Storm Lake.
Toni was born Jan. 14, 1966 in Cherokee, to Dennis and Mary Ann (Wilson) McGowan. She was raised in the Storm Lake area where she attended schools and graduated from high school in Western Grove, Arkansas. She attended college where she played women's basketball.
She was married to Windell Morgan and then was later married to Daniel Johnikin, on April 21, 2005 in Sioux City. She was currently working for the CCUSO unit and had also worked at the YES Detention Center in Cherokee.
She had lived in Cherokee the past six years, prior to this in Quimby. She was a member of the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sioux City. She enjoyed music, drawing, fishing, attending her son's activities, watching sports, especially college basketball.
She was preceded in death by her father, a brother Tom McGowan, a sister Susie McGowan, and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
She is survived by her husband, Daniel of Cherokee; one son, Jamon McGowan of Cherokee; her mother, Mary McGowan of Everton, Ark.; two step-children: James Johnikin of Sioux Falls, S.D. and Kelsey Johnikin of Jacksonville, Ala.; three brothers and two sisters: Tim McGowan and his wife Karen of Lignum, Virg.; Kelly Denkinger and her husband Stan of Minneapolis, Minn.; Stacy Sappenfield and her husband David of Everton, Ark.; Shane McGowan of Marble Falls, Ark.; Shawn McGowan and his wife Megan of Aurelia.
