SCHALLER - The Galva-Holstein boys basketball team played a very good first quarter here on Thursday night in a make-up game against Schaller-Crestland, leading 19-7 after the initial quarter. The Pirates held that 12- point lead through the second quarter and led 27-15 at the half.
In the third quarter, though, said Pirate coach Bob Lee, "we came out a little flat, and Schaller-Crestland took advantage of it to make it a close game."
The Wildcats cut the Pirates' lead to just five, 38-33, going into the fourth quarter, and then, said Lee, "We missed key free throws towards the end of the game, and they made theirs."
The result was a 50-49 non-conference win for Schaller-Crestland, which left the Pirates with a 3-6 season record.
Ben Andresen led Galva-Holstein scoring with 14 points, and also had six steals and one blocked shot on defense. Mark Cronin scored 11 points and Kellen Jacobson scored seven and added eight rebounds. Cole Egger had nine points and Taylor Nees scored six points and grabbed five rebounds.
Collin Johnson scored 18 to pace the Wildcats' attack and Kiley Murra added 12.
The Pirates host two MVC games this week, playing Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto on Tuesday and River Valley on Thursday, before traveling to Woodbury Central on Friday.
