KINGSLEY - The Maple Valley Conference was one of the first Northwest Iowa high school conferences to embrace the sport of wrestling, and over the years has produced a number of outstanding teams and individual wrestlers.

Next year, the Maple Valley and Boyer Valley Conferences will merge and form a new conference, so the MVC Wrestling Tournament held here on Jan. 12 was the final conference tourney for the venerable MVC as we know it.

With a number of strong units again this year, the 2008 tournament was certainly a grand way for the MVC to go out.

When the final victor's arm had been raised Saturday, the team standings showed the Lawton-Bronson Eagles were the "King of the Hill," as they scored 211.5 points. BC-IG/OA placed second with 190 points, Woodbury Central was third, with 188.5, and the Aurelia/Galva-Holstein/Schaller-Crestland Stonecutters were fourth in the eight-team tourney, scoring 165.5 points. MVAO, K-P, West Monona and Westwood placed fifth through eighth, respectively.

AGHSC had two individual champions. The Stonecutters' Adam Parker - currently ranked second in the state - won the 130-pound title, and 140-pounder Kyle Yearous was also champion at his weight.

Third-place finishers for AGHSC were Tyler Kenny (119), Steve White (135), and Adam Dreeszen (Heavyweight). The Stonecutters' Vance Kreutz (112), Nick Felten (145). Jason Glienke (160), and Seth Bruce (215), and Ronnie Huseman (103) and Cory Naberhaus (171) took fifth place honors at their weights.

The AGHSC coaches were happy with the effort of their wrestlers throughout the tournament, feeling they were "more aggressive and more physcal" than they were in their last meet. AGHSC next competes in Ida Grove at the BC-IG Tournament Friday and Saturday.
