ESTHERVILLE - The Cherokee Braves found the going tough at a Lakes Conference wrestling double dual here Tuesday night featuring Lakes leader Spencer, and host Estherville-LC.

The double dual, originally scheduled for December 6 but postponed due to inclement weather, saw E-LC beat the Braves 48-20, and Spencer win big 69-12.

Cherokee's undefeated and second-ranked Nick Loughlin ran his sparkling season record to 28-0, winning by technical fall and a fall. He was the Braves' lone double winner. Heavyweight Tin Jones and Pat Loughlin at 160 pounds also recorded pins for Cherokee.

Jones won the 100th match of his prep career with a fall over Shane Wegner of E-LC in that dual's opening match. Jones wrestled at 215 for the Braves his first three seasons, and this year competes at heavyweight (285 pounds or less).

"One hundred wins is a major accomplishment for any wrestler," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "We are very proud of Tim. Nick kept up his technical fall campaign, winning his 12th of the season. He has broken the season mark of nine set by Kyle Skaggs, and has tied Kyle's career record of 18. Steve Veit also had a very exciting match for us, holding his opponent on his back for the last minute of the match to get a win.

"We did not match well with Spencer. They are at the top of the Lakes and (brothers) Nick and Pat Loughlin were our only wins, each winning by fall. Tim had a tough one in this dual (Tiger Casey Musseigman, rated sixth in Class 3A) and lost 5-2."

Cherokee gave up six forfeits against ELC, and seven against Spencer.

Gordy Gill (152), Manny Bustos (152), and Danny Bieber (171) wrestled and lost two matches each for Cherokee in JV action.

The Braves compete in the Lakes Conference Tournament Friday in Spencer, and have added an extra double dual to the schedule, taking on Hinton and Westwood Tuesday in Hinton, starting at 6 p.m.
