HOLSTEIN - The annual Maple Valley Conference basketball tournament tipped off on Jan. 22 - delayed a day because of wintry weather - and the Galva-Holstein boys came away with a first-round victory.
The Galva-Holstein Pirates engaged in a "very competitive game" with Odebolt-Arthur, according to Pirate coach Bob Lee. Lee said that OA "did a good job in the second and third quarters of slowing down our offense." Late in the third quarter, though, Lee said the Pirates again got "some very important minutes from our bench to get our offense started back up," and the Pirates went on to register a 53-48 win.
Taylor Nees hit 10 of his 11 field goal attempts and was 4-5 from the line to lead G-H scoring with 24 points. Nees also added nine rebounds, two steals, an assist and a blocked shot to his game totals. Mark Cronin scored 10 points for the Pirates and snared seven boards.
Marcus Hanson and Tyler Schroeder each scored 12 points for Odebolt-Arthur.
Coach Lee said, "We always know it will be a battle any time we play O-A. We are happy to get the win and continue on in the tournament."
