SPENCER - Loaded with a handful of deep and talented squads, the 2007-2008 Lakes Conference Championships' team title went to host Spencer here Friday night, the Tigers totaling 237.5 points to runner-up Spirit Lake Park's 179.5.

Emmetsburg/Armstrong-Ringsted placed third with 165 points, followed by Sheldon-South O'Brien 158, Storm Lake 147.5, Le Mars 79.5, Estherville-LC 77, Cherokee 59, and Hull Western Christian 56.5.

Cherokee boasted one champion in undefeated senior Nick Loughlin, who zipped through three foes to claim the 152-pound division. In running his sparkling season record to 31-0, Loughlin pinned Matt McMurty of SLP in 44 seconds, beat Ben Seaman of Storm Lake 20-4 in technical fall, and won a 13-3 major decision over Joey Naig of E-AR in the finals.

Cherokee senior heavyweight Tim Jones claimed runner-up honors after getting pinned by Class 3A sixth-ranked Casey Muessigmann of Spencer, in 3:12. Jones pinned Zach Iverson of E-LC n 1:49, and pinned Wade Franek of SLP in 1:34 to make it to the finals where he lost to Muessigmann for the second time this season.

Cherokee's Steve Veit placed fifth in the rugged 145-pound weight class, going 2-2 in matches for the day. Veit lost a narrow 6-5 decision to Dan Ridenour of S-SOS, pinned Ryan Hoksbergen of HWC, was pinned by Ryan Lovestad of Storm Lake, and pinned Cullen Andrea of SLP in 2:16 for fifth place.

The Braves were open in six weights in the conference tourney, entering eight grapplers, with three of them placing, including champion Loughlin.

Matt Sparks was 0-2 at 119 pounds for Cherokee, Pat Loughlin 1-2 at 160, Tyler Lundsgaard 0-2 at 171, Dillon Devitt 0-2 at 189, and Peter Cosgrove 0-2 at 215.

"The Lakes Conference Championhips were tough as usual," said Cherokee coach Jason Wood. "Spencer ran away with the team title early in the night."

Cherokee competes in the tough Class 2A Sectional at Sheldon on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. The top two place winners in each weight class then advance to the 2A Districts in Cherokee the following Saturday (Feb. 9). The top two finishers in Districts qualify for the State Tournament at the Wells Fargo Center in Des Moines Feb. 13-16.
