ESTHERVILLE - The Cherokee Washington High girls outscored Lakes Conference leader Estherville-LC 26-23 in the second half, but a 21-12 deficit at halftime was too much to overcome as the host Midgets went on to a 51-38 victory here on Feb. 1.

Lacie Drennan led the balanced Cherokee scoring with eight points, while Alison Husman and Shauna Drefke added seven apiece, and Shelby Dilla and Jesselyn Racine five each.

Christa Clayton paced the eighth-ranked 3A Midgets with 22 game-high points.

Drennan was a force on the boards, pulling down a dozen rebounds, while Husman snagged seven, and Nicole Hatch and Erica Nicholson four apiece. Dilla led her team in steals with four, and Hatch led in assists with three.

The Midgets tallied 14-24 free throws, compared to Cherokee's 12-14, a solid performance for the WHS club, according tp coach Jeremey Dettmer.

Cherokee was whistled for 21 fouls, and E-LC for 17 in the fast-paced game.

"Offensively, we struggled at times, but we finally got the offense clicking in the second half," said Dettmer. "E-LC is a very good team and we played them even in the second half.

"Once again, we started out slow and trailed 14-7 in the first quarter before we decided to play our game. We did some good things in the second half and maybe we can build off them down the road."
