Hansen leads RV boys with record 6 threes
SLOAN - The River Valley basketball teams split a pair of games with Westwood here on Feb.5, the RV girls winning 48-45 in the Maple Valley Conference opener, and the host Rebels nicking the feisty Wolverines 40-39 in the boys' exciting nightcap.
Alyssa Slota and Emily Todd led the winning RV girls in scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Haley Evans scored 13, and Katie Walker 12 for Westwood.
River Valley led at all the breaks - 9-8 after the first quarter, 21-15 at halftime, and 38-25 heading into the fourth quarter, after a 17-10 scoring run in the pivotal third frame.
Austin Hansen scored 20 points to lead the RV boys, while Anthony Volkert tallied six, and Zach Hullinger five in the losing effort.
Tyler Clark and Hullinger each pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Wolverines in that category, while Hansen snagged seven, and Ethan Todd five. Clark also led in assists with four, and Hansen led in steals with three. Todd blocked three shots.
The RV boys sank 14-38 field goals for 37 percent, and cashed in 3-9 free throws.
"Our team lost a heart-breaker as two potential game-winning shots rimmed out in a one-point loss," said RV coach Dean Norris. "Austin Hansen broke a school record with six three-point scores."
