HOLSTEIN - The Galva-Holstein Pirates shot the ball poorly in their non-conference matchup with the Newell-Fonda Mustangs here on Feb. 8, but nonetheless had "several opportunities to put the game out of reach," said their coach Bob Lee."Unfortunately, we didn't," Lee went on, "and Newell-Fonda fought back to win." The Mustangs won 49-46.
The Pirates led the game at the first and third quarter breaks, and the Mustangs led at the half by four, and again at the end, wining by the 49-46 score.
Taylor Nees led the Pirates with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Ben Andresen had 13 points. Nathan Schumann scored 13 for Newell-Fonda and Robert Devereau added 11.
The Pirates (10-10) drew a bye in the first round of District Tournament play, and will take on Boyer Valley in a 6:30 p.m. game on Feb. 15th at Woodbine.
