Upsets abound in boys tourneys

Galva-Holstein boys still alive

Several highly-regarded high school basketball teams received a rude awakening this week when they embarked on the boys post-season tournament trail. That is one thing you can count on every year, though sometimes players, coaches and fans forget that.

This week - in one single night of Northwest Iowa boys tourney action - #4 Alta, #6 Rock Valley, and #10 Lawton-Bronson were all defeated in Class 1A District Tournament semi-final contests. Alta (20-2) lost to Laurens Marathon (16-6), Rock Valley (19-3) lost to Boyden-Hull (12-11), and Lawton-Bronson (19-2) lost to Le Mars Gehlen (12-10).

And in Class 2A, previously-undefeated and #4 East Sac County (21-1) also fell to 19-3 Battle Creek-Ida Grove.

Bottom line - don't take anything for granted come tournament time.

Ya gotta love it -- unless you're on the losing side, of course.

The Galva-Holstein boys (12-10) remained the lone team in the Chronicle Times coverage area still alive in the tournament. The G-H boys went on to beat Woodbury Central in Mapleton for the Class 1A District championship, then took on Boyden-Hull in the 1A substate final on Feb. 26 at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City.
