Cherokee men earn 'Big Fish' awards

CEDAR FALLS - Three Cherokee fishermen will receive 2007 Iowa Big Fish Angler Awards at the Eastern Iowa Sports Show in the UNI-Dome here this weekend.

More than 500 Iowans caught trophy fish in Iowa waters and registered their catch with the Department of Natural Resources. Trophy fish awards are given by the DNR for every type of game fish found in Iowa waters.

Trophy fish winners will receive a signed and serialized print commemorating the trophy fish they caught in Iowa waters in 2007. The awards are sponsored by KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids.

R. Wayne Witcombe of Cherokee will receive three Big Fish Angler Awards, after hauling in an 8-pound, 6-ounce, 28-inch Walleye on the Little Sioux River in Cherokee County; a 9-pound, 10-ounce, 29.5-inch Walleye at Storm lake; and an 8-pound, 5-ounce, 28-inch Walleye also at Storm Lake.

Gary Stilley of Cherokee will receive two Big Fish Angler Awards, after catching a 17.5-inch Bass on West Okoboji, and a 1-pound, 10.1-inch Bluegill at Spirit Lake.

James Buck of Cherokee will receive one Big Fish Angler Award after catching a 22.75-inch Largemouth Bass at a farm pond in Cherokee County.

The Sports Show is from 2-9 p.m. Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Sunday. Many exhibits, fishing and hunting seminars and displays, boats, RVs, and recreation equipment also will be featured. The fishing awards will be presented on both Saturday and Sunday.

Admission is $6 for adults, $4 for youths ages 10-15, and free for age 9-and-under. A Friday special is adult tickets for $3 from 2-5 p.m.
