Ruby L. Ryan, 96, of Cherokee, passed away Monday morning, March 17, 2008 in the Careage Hills in Cherokee.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, March 20, at 2 p.m. at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Rev. Ethan Sayler officiated and burial was in the Quimby Cemetery.

Ruby was born Aug. 28, 1911 at Clarion, Iowa to Newt & Mary (Lanning) Swain. She graduated in 1928 from Central High School in Fort Dodge. She attended Iowa State University every summer for Continuing Education Classes for Dietary Supervisors. She was married to Edward P. Ryan on Aug. 5, 1929 at Storm Lake. She worked for the Cherokee Community Schools as the Food Service Director for 30 years, retiring in May of 1977. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church. She loved playing cards, writing letter and cooking.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975, two sons Stanley and Jerry Ryan, one granddaughter Rene Ryan, two sisters Eva Braden and Mabel Beddow.

She is survived by two sons: Mike J. Ryan and his wife Tessie of Sioux City; Keith "Pat" Ryan of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, four great great-grandchildren, two nephews and a very special friend Gladys Albers of Cherokee.
