WHS track teams vie in Lakes

STORM LAKE - Partial Cherokee Washington High track squads participated in the season-opening Lakes Conference Indoor Track & Field meet at Buena Vista University here on March 18th, with Matt Koch leading the Braves with a first-place finish in the high jump, and a second-place finish in the 55-meter high hurdles.

Koch leaped 6-04 to win the high jump, while teammate Kyle Schuck jumped 5-10 for second place. Koch was clocked in 8.15 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles for second place.

Other top 20 finishes for the Braves included Drew Lugar sixth in the 55-meter hurdles in a time of 8.33, and Schuck 9th in the hurdles in a time of 8.58. Dan Bieber was sixth in the 800 meters with a 2:19.2 clocking, Lugar placed 16th in the long jump with a 17.02 effort, Nolan Sampson was 17th in the hurdles in 9.45, and Steven Veit 18th in the 55-meters in 7.12.

Also, Nick O'Bryan was 14th in the 1600 meters in 5:25.8, and Zach Mosbach was 15th in 5:26.8. Jakob Hummel finished 20th in the 800 meters in 2:30.5.

In the relays, the Braves' 4x800 unit of Philip Bieber, Luke Pearson, Zach Mosbach, and Nick O'Bryan was fourth in a time of 9:25.5; the 4x200 relay placed ninth in 1:43.35, with Koch, Lugar, Schuck, and Veit aboard; the 4x400 relay of Koch, Veit, Philip Bieber, and Lugar was 10th in a time of 3:53.86; and the 4x400 relay of Schuck, Tony Hunt, Pearson, and Dan Bieber timed a 4:08.11 and finished 18th.

In the girls competition for Cherokee, Erica Nicholson was second in the 800 meters in a time of 2:38.8, and Jessica Cook was fifth in 2:46.3. The 4x400 relay of Kelsey Essick, Liz Dawson, Cook, and Nicholson clocked a 4:55.1 and did not place.

Just 11 events were competed for both the boys and girls squads.
