Nearly eight years ago, Rick Mongan and his son Matt started a painting contracting business out of their homes. The business, which specializes in industrial and commercial painting, has grown considerably since those days and now employs 26 employees.

The Mongan crew has painted commercial facilities such as swimming pools and water treatment facilities, and Matt Mongan said the company has painted 54 ethanol plants in 15 states over the past four years. When the "weather breaks," and spring arrives, Mongan said his crews will in all likelihood be working seven days a week.

In March and April of 2007, Matt Mongan spent a lot of time in classrooms in Vallejo, CA. and Kansas City, MO. taking two 60 - hour courses in paint inspection. Following a two hour exam and a practical "hands-on" exam, Matt was certified as a Level 3 inspector by the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE), so he can now inspect paint jobs to make sure things are going correctly, and may also supervise Level One and Two inspectors.

Mongan says he really hasn't branched out much yet in the inspection field, but has been inspecting the Mongan crews' work.

Though commercial painting is their stock-in-trade, Matt Mongan said they have also installed foam insulation for homeowners in the past, and could still do this, as time permits.
