WHS Speech students excel at State competitions

Friday, April 4, 2008

Cherokee Washington High School Speech students had a very successful season this year.

Six groups attended State Large Group competition, with two groups receiving a I rating and four groups receiving a II rating. These groups included one Ensemble Acting entry, three Group Improvisations, one Mime, and one Choral Reading.

In addition to Group Speech, students competed on the individual level as well. Eight entries were taken to the State competition and of these eight entries four were awarded a I rating. These I ratings went to the following individuals - Nicole Titus, David Gerjets, Maddy Miller, and Allie Chase.

In addition, two students from Individual competition will be participating at the All-State event in late March. Nicole Titus and Allie Chase were awarded All-State nominations. This is the highest honor a speech student can attain. Nicole will be performing an Original Oratory and Allie Chase will be performing in the Spontaneous Speaking category. This is Nicole's first trip to All-State and Allie's second trip to All-State in as many years.

The WHS speech team is comprised of freshmen to senior students. Many students have been involved in speech for over two years. James and Jaylene De Vos coach the WHS speech team.
