Husman, Carlson pace WHS girls

HMS wins 2008 Girls Tomahawk Relays title

Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn captured the Class 1A title of the 2008 Girls Tomahawk Relays here on April 4, totaling 108 team points to runner-up Emmetsburg's 77.

Central Lyon placed third with 74 points, followed by Pocahontas Area 74, Galva-Holstein 48, MOC-Floyd Valley 48, Sioux Central 47, Cherokee 41.5, South O'Brien 37.5, Aurelia 20, Alta 11, and Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn 3.

Lynn Carlson led the Cherokee girls with a first-place finish in the shot put with a heave of 37-7 1/2, and Alison Husman won the 400 meters in a thrilling photo finish with Galva-Holstein's Jessica Mathes. Husman clocked 1:02.93, and Mathes 1:02.95. Husman took a nasty fall on the all-weather track while giving it her all at the finish line, but the gritty senior shook it off afterward.

Erica Nicholson showed solid early-season form in finishing third in the 1500 meters in a time of 5:24.4. The 4x100 relay of Kelsey Essick, Sara Ruehle, Liz Dawson, and Lauren Husman also placed third in a time of 55.5.

Cherokee's distance medley relay of Julie Miller, Bailey English, Jenna Walsh, and Nicholson was fourth in 4:42.38. Alison Husman also was fourth in the 200 meters in a time of 28.76.

The WHS 4x400 relay of Essick, Dawson, Lauren Husman, and Alison Husman was sixth in 4:39.9. Dawson also placed sixth in the high jump with a 4-4 effort.

"We had just 10 girls competing due to some injuries and disciplinary measures," said Cherokee coach Neil Phipps. "We don't have a big squad any way and that limited us. Alison Husman, Lynn Carlson, and Erica Nicholson had top performances in the first outdoor meet of the year. Jenna Walsh made some good improvement with some personal bests as well."

Aurelia's Shelby Dierenfield won the high jump with a 5-0 leap to pace the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs' sprint medley relay placed third in a time of 2:03.84, with Dierenfield, Meghan Glawe, Erin Laursen, and Audrey Winterhof aboard.

Aurelia's 4x200 relay of Dierenfield, Laursen, Regan Hinkel, and WInterhof was fourth in 1:58.65.

For Galva-Holstein, Jessica Mathes won the 1500 meters in a time of 5:21.33, and Jayde Boyle was second in the 800 meters in a time of 2:33.74. Mathes also was second in the 400 meters in 1:02.95. Meagan Meyer was sixth in the 400 meters in 1:10.96, as was Ashley Drey in the 3000 meters in 12:41.41.

The G-H 4x400 relay finished third in 4:29.80, the shuttle hurdle relay was fifth in 1:17.41, and the distance medley relay fifth in 4:44.07.

For South O'Brien, Reagan Ebel was third in the discus with a throw of 95-5, and Danielle Steinbeck was fifth in the long jump with a 13-8 leap. Ashton Lansink was third in the 400 meters in a time of 1:05.82, and Chelsie Rohrs sixth in the high jump, clearing 4-4.

Also for the Wolverines, Miranda Kelleher was third in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:16.10, Taylor Julian sixth in the 100-meter hurdles in 17.61, and Katie Tesch sixth in 1:19.68 in the 400 hurdles.

The SOS sprint medley relay was fourth in a time of 2:04.41, the 4x800 relay third in 11:08.55, the 4x100 relay fifth in 56.67, and the shuttle hurdle relay was sixth in 1:17.45.

For MMC, the 4x200 relay was fifth in 1:59.14, and the sprint medley relay sixth in 2:05.63.
