Schuett, Lugar pace Braves; Carlson leads WHS girls
SIOUX CITY - The Cherokee Washington High boys and girls track and field squads turned in some great efforts at the April 19th Sioux City Relays, run in near-perfect weather conditions.
In the boys action, Cherokee's Kyle Schuett won the open (all classes) 100-meter race with a speedy 11.02 clocking, and also won the Class B 100 meters in 11.33.
Drew Lugar also picked off a first-place finish with a 16.23 time in the Class B 110 hurdles, with Matt Koch placing third in a time of 16.44. Lugar was fifth in the open 110-meter hurdles in 15.99, and Koch finished seventh with a 16.36 clocking. Koch also was sixth in the Class B high jump with a 6-0 effort.
The Braves rang up two fifth-place finishes in the relays, with the 4x100 relay of Lugar, Koch, Steve Veit, and Schuett timed in 46.21 in the stiff competition; and the 4x400 relay of Lugar, Dan Bieber, Philip Bieber, and Luke Pearson clocking a 3:38.40.
Cherokee's 4x800 relay was 12th in 8:52.22, with Philip Bieber, Dan Bieber, Zack Mosback, and Pearson aboard. Veit was 14th in the 100 meters in a time of 12.55.
Lynn Carlson led the Cherokee girls with a second-place finish in the Class B shot put with a throw of 38-6. She also placed 7th in the discus with a 100-2 effort.
The distance medley relay of Kelsey Essick, Sarah Ruehle, Lauren Husman, and Alison Husman placed fifth in a time of 4:34.24; the 4x100 relay of Essick, Ruehle, Lauren Husman, and Alanna Valentine was sixth in 54.89; and the 4x200 comprised of that same foursome clocked a season's best time of 1:54.77 for 8th place.
Erica Nicholson finished 10th in the 1500 meters in 5:21.73, and Alison Husman was fifth in the long jump with a 16-4 leap.
Cherokee's 4x800 relay got bumped out of pace in the lead leg and had to dodge a runner who had dropped the baton, but still managed to finish the race in 12th place with an 11:41.1 time. Nicholson, Jenna Walsh, Valentine, and Alison Husman comprised that relay.
