Monday, May 5, 2008

SERGEANT BLUFF - Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn girls' track and field coach Ric Collins was very pleased with his team's performances at the recent meet at Sergeant Bluff.

The Eagles scored 70 points, to finish fourth of eight teams in Class B. Some of their points were earned by throwers Taylor Hohbach and Jackie Holmes. Sophomore Hohbach garnered first in the discus with a throw of 92-4 and third in the shot, heaving the ball 30-9. Freshman Holmes finished fifth in the shot put (30-4 1/2) and sixth in the discus (71-0).

"With a small team," said Collins,"we have used relays to score points on the track, and we place high in the ones we run!"

Last week, the Eagles took first in the 4x200, with the team of Amanda Hoefling, Rachel McDermott, Ashley Schneider and Jena Mittelstadt circling the track in a time of 1:58.9. The same girls finished second in the sprint medley, with a time of 2:06.7. The same group also took third in the distance medley, with McDermott and Mittelstadt switching spots. With McDermott anchoring, the Eagles ran the event in a time of 4:57.9.

In the two other relays, the shuttle hurdle team of Ashley Weber, Kelsey Brady, Megan Deichmann and Mittelstadt took fourth with a time of 1:26.2; and the 4x100 team, comprised of McDermott, Deichmann, Brady and Hoefling, also took fourth, with a time of 59.2.

Individual running events earning points included Ashley Schneider (27.5) and Jena Mittelstadt (28.5) in the 200 meters; and Jill Bird, who earned fourth place (13:14.1) in the 3000 meter run, and sixth place (6:17.3) in the 1500 meters.
