Aurelia's Bruce shines in tough competition

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Jared Bruce
FORT DODGE - The Aurelia High School boys' track and field squad headed into some pretty stiff competition on May 1, running against the likes of West Des Moines Valley, Fort Dodge, and Des Moines Roosevelt and Hoover, at the Dodger Relays here.

The Bulldogs placed eighth out of eight teams in the team standings, totaling 17 points, but did have another outstanding performance from the man who has provided many such performances over the course of a stellar four-year athletic career at Aurelia.

Jared Bruce earned the bulk of the 'Dogs' points, as he won the 3200 meter run with a time of 10:18.50 to beat the field by almost nine seconds, then placed third in the 1600 meters to two Valley runners, with a time of 4:55.97.

For good measure, Bruce anchored the Bulldogs' 1600 medley relay team to a 6th place finish, as he and Anthony Fowler, Brandon Pedersen and brother Aaron Bruce turned in a time of 3:58.01 in that event.

Jared Bruce's 10:18.5 clocking in the 3200 meters is the 4th fastest time of the year among Class 1A runners.

The District meet will be run in Laurens on Saturday, May 10, with the State Co-Ed Meet to be run at Drake Stadium in Des Moines from May 15-17.

Bruce, who plans to play football at Buena Vista University this fall, will graduate from Aurelia High School with 38 classmates the day after the State Track Meet concludes.
