Sesquicentennial Committee buries time capsule

The Sesquicentennial Committee and friends gathered at Gillette Park on Tuesday to place items into a time capsule that will be opened in 2056. The committee looks onward while Beth Anderson placed items into the capsule
Members of the Cherokee Sesquicentennial Committee met at Gillette Park recently to place objects into the Sesquicentennial time capsule. The committee decided to place the capsule next to the Centennial Shelter.

This project has been in the works for over two years. Committee members and friends gathered items from the Cherokee Sesquicentennial celebration that was held two years ago.

At the time, it was decided that the capsule would be placed next to Centennial Shelter in Gillette Park. The only problem was that the shelter had not been built yet. With the renovation of Gillette Park and the new Bacon Aquatic Center, the project was on hold until construction was complete. Now that the weather has warmed up, the committee's long-awaited day had finally come.

Memorabilia items placed in the time capsule include: DVD player; coffee cups; a koozee; a magnetized label; a yo-yo; tin buttons with the C150 logo (made by Cherokee Work Services); one C150 belt buckle of the 40th Cherokee PRCA Rodeo; one wooden toy; one issue of News Week; one issue of U.S. News & World Report; one issue of Better Homes and Garden;, two issues of Kiplinger's; one issue of MONEY magazine; four issues of the Chronicle Times; four issues of newsletter/newspaper of Cherokee Regional Medical Center.

Also, one DVD Cherokee Sesquicentennial Opening Ceremony; All School Concert and parade; one DVD Gillett Park/Family Aquatic Center Video; One CD-R "Main Street Renovation Presentation;" one CD-R of Area Photos of Cherokee; 2006 Sesquicentennial Photos; booklet "Explore Cherokee County; three Telephone Directories; three books "Remembering Yesterdays…A Pictorial History of Cherokee County;" "The Historical Commercial Heritage of Downtown Cherokee, 1870-1948;" " Signs of Their Times" Iowa hometown slogans, photos and stories; Cherokee High School Annual 2007; one color photo of Cherokee Public Library; one Cherokee Public Library card; one newsletter of the Cherokee Public Library.
