Benson fires 74 for runner-up medalist
OKOBOJI - The Cherokee Braves golf team, winners of the last three regular-season triangulars, placed fifth, one point out of fourth place, at the May 5th Lakes Conference Golf Meet at Brooks Golf Course here.
Spencer won the team title after carding a 305, followed by Emmetsburg 306, Spirit Lake 322, Sheldon 333, Cherokee 334, Hull Western Christian 338, Storm Lake 341, Le Mars 348, and Estherville-LC 368.
Cherokee's Brock Benson earned All-Lakes Conference honors after scoring 74 for runner-up medalist. Spencer's Jay Monahan was meet medalist with 71.
Other low medal for the Braves were Andy Braun 85, Scott Brown 87, David Cook 88, and Paxton O'Connor 88. Matt Pitts carded a 92 for the Braves.
"The boys went out against the conference today and competed very well," said Cherokee coach James DeVos. "They did not finish as high as they hoped, but it is Cherokee's best conference finish in many years, so they shouuld hold their heads high.
"Brock really set the pace for us with his 74. He's been playing well all year and is keeping it going. We are looking forward to a tough sectional meet Friday, with hopes of advancing to districts again."
