SIOUX CENTER - At the May 10th Class 2A Districts here, the Cherokee Braves qualified five events and the Washington High girls four events for the 2008 State Track & Field Championships beginning May 15th at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
The Braves were paced by state qualifiers Kyle Schuett, who won the 100 meters in a speedy 11.17 seconds; Matt Koch, who placed second in the high jump with a 5-10 leap; Drew Lugar, who finished third in the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 16.17; Dan Bieber, who clocked a 52.0 time in the 400 meters for third place; and the 4x100 relay of Chris Campbell, Stephen Veit, Lugar, and Schuett timed in 44.81 for third place.
For the Cherokee girls making state, Alison Husman won the long jump with a 16-1 1/4 effort, and was third in the 400 meters in 1:03.17; Lynn Carlson was second in the shot put with a 37-6 throw; and Erica Nicholson was second in the 1500 meters in a time of 5:18.02.
While the South O'Brien girls were shut out in the 2A competition, the Wolverine boys qualified for state in three events, with Taylor Schroeder finishing second in the long jump (no distance reported), Aaron Giese third in the discus with a 139-4 throw, and Keagan Hicks third in the 1600 meters in a time of 4:56.50.
Orange City Unity Christian won the boys team title with 117 points, followed by Okoboji 89, Hull Western Christian 81, Cherokee 43, Sheldon 36, Sioux Center 36, Sibley-Ocheyedan 34, Battle Creek-Ida Grove 30, Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley 26, West Sioux 24, South O'Brien 23, Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 19.
HWC won the girls team title with 84 points, followed by Unity Christian 74, HMS 68, BHRV 57, S-O 52, Cherokee 49, Sioux Center 49, Okoboji 39, BCIG 15, South O'Brien 3.
Other top finishes for the Braves were the shuttle hurdle relay of Koch, Kyle Schuck, Luke Pearson, and Lugar finishing fifth in 1:03.14; the 4x200 relay of Veit, Koch, Kody Riggs, and Schuett fifth in 1:37.51; the 4x400 relay of Lugar, Dan Bieber, Philip Bieber, and Pearson fifth in 3:42.35; and Campbell sixth in the 100 meters in 11.77.
For the WHS girls, the distance medley relay of Lauren Husman, Alanna Valentine, Kelsey Essick, and Nicholson was third in 4:38.84; Valentine was fourth in the 400 hurdles in 1:13.31; the sprint medley relay of Essick, Sara Ruehle, Julie Miller, and Alison Husman was fifth in 2:04.7; the 4x200 relay of Ruehle, Jenna Walsh, Liz Dawson, and Miller was sixth in 2:02.36; the 4x100 relay of Ruehle, Kelsie Peterson, Dawson, and Miller was sixth (no time submitted); and the 4x400 relay of Valentine, Lauren Husman, Essick, and Alison Husman was sixth in 4:34.05.
