Jared Bruce
LAURENS - Aurelia's outstanding senior runner, Jared Bruce, was pretty much "it" for the Bulldogs at the May 10th Class 1A District Track and Field meet, held in drizzly, overcast conditions here.

Bruce ran in the 3200 meter run first, and kept his season-long unbeaten streak alive as he beat Storm Lake St. Mary's Paul Yak in an unimposing time of 10:27.37, far from his best, but good enough to get him to the State Meet in Des Moines this Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium.

Bruce also ran in the 800 meters, and finished second with a time of 2:04.27. In this exciting race, winner Wes Farrington of Rockwell City-Lytton won in a time of 2:04.16 and the hard-luck third place finisher, Brian Patterson of Bishop Garrigan was timed in 2:04.43.

Bruce completed his trifecta in the 1600 meters, which he ran in a third-place time of 4:59.79, behind Farrington's 4:44.29

Clay Central-Everly's Austin Klett won the long jump at the Class 1A Laurens District Meet
Neither the Bulldog boys or girls had anyone else qualify for the State Meet.

One other competitor with a Cherokee County connection did grab a State Meet berth, however. Sophomore Austin Klett of Clay Central-Everly leaped to a first place finish in the boys long jump, jumping 19-8.

Klett is the son of Gary and Marcia Klett of rural Everly, and Marcia is the former Marcia Winterhof, who starred in basketball at Aurelia High School from 1975-78.

Southern Cal won the Boys Team title, scoring 103 points to second place Alta's 89. Southern Cal also took the Girls' team title with 93 points, edging out Bishop Garrigan of Algona, which had 92 points.

Other Aurelia results included junior Brandon Pedersen finishing fifth in the 400 meters, running the event in 56.52, and also seventh in the 800 meter run, with a time of 2:12.61.

The Bulldogs ran in four relay events. The 1600 medley (Anthony Fowler, Aaron Bruce, Steve White and Jacob Howey) finished 10th, with a time of 4:18.67; the 4x200 (same members as the medley) was fifth, with a time of 1:40.87; the 4x400 team of Aaron Bruce, Anthony Fowler, Steve White and Brandon Pedersen finished sixth. in a time of 3:48.79; and the 4x100 (Howey, Jason Glienke, Dalton Lytle and Elliot Zadow) finished 11th, with a time of 53.11.

In girls' action, the Bulldogs' distance medley team of Shaina Thevenin, Meghan Glawe, Erin Laursen and Audrey Winterhof ran a 4:36.96 to finish third ; the sprint medley team of Shaina Thevenin, Erin Laursen, Regan Henkel and Audrey Winterhof finished fifth, with a time of 2:02.20; and Thevenin, Laursen, Henkel and Winterhof took fifth in the x100, with a time of 56.08.
