MMC also goes to district at LeMars
HINTON - The strong Hinton boys' golf team - state champs in 2006 and runners up last year, won the Class 1A Sectional tournament May 9th on their home Deer Run Golf Course. The Blackhawks' Cory Westphal was meet medalist with an 18-hole score of 69.
The Aurelia team finished second, with a score of 339, and another Cherokee County school, Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, was third, with a 346. Aurelia and MMC will both advance to the District Tournament this Friday, along with Hinton. The District will be held at the LeMars Municipal Course.
Hinton's Nate Freed was runner up medalist with a round of 79, and he, medalist Westphal, K-P's Matt Young ( who also shot a 79) , Hinton's Dustin Kruse and Aurelia's Greg Kolpin will advance to the District in medal play. Kruse and Kolpin both shot rounds of 81.
Aurelia coach Tom Bohnenkamp said he was pleasantly surprised by his team's showing Friday. Though they have shot consistently all season, their scores have generally not been as low as they were at the Sectional.
Kingsley-Pierson placed fourth in the team standings, at 349, followed by Akron-Westfield (358) and Galva-Holstein (362).
