G-H, MMC, RV athletes earn state berths

HOLSTEIN - Galva-Holstein and Manning battled for the team titles in both the boys and girls sections of the Class 1A District Track and Field Meet held here on May 10.

When all was said and done, the girls' teams from the two schools ended up in a dead heat for the team title, scoring 75 points each.

The boys' team race was almost as tight, but the Pirates wound up edging the Bulldogs by a scant 4 points, 94-90, courtesy of a second place finish in the day's final event, the 4x400 meter relay. Manning finished fourth in that event, beating the fifth place West Monona team by just over one second.

More important at the District is the number of athletes whose performances qualify them to compete at the State Meet in Des Moines May 15-17 (see list below)

GALVA-HOLSTEIN: State Qualifiers include Sam Radke, who won both the 100 meters (11.12) and 200 meters (23.32); John Harris, winner of the 400 meters with a time of 51.45; Jessica Mathes, winner of the girls' 1500 meter run, with a time of 5:20.11; The 4x400 relay team of Jayde Boyle, Madeline McAreavy, Jessica Mathes and Brianna Mathes won, with a time of 4:24.25, allowing them to tie for the team title with second-place finisher Manning; the 4x800 team ran the same girls, in the same order, and also won that event, with a time of 10:34.26; G-H also won the boys 1600 medley, in 3:47.36. Sam Radke led off that quartet and John Harris anchored. Jared Schlinz and Andrew Galvin ran the second and third legs, respectively.

Second place Pirate and Lady Pirate finishes, which also qualified these athletes for State Meet appearances, included Mark Cronin in the shot put (45-3 1/2); Jayde Boyle in the girls' 800 meter run, with a time of 2:36.25; Jared Schlinz in the 110 meter hurdles (15.82); the boys' 4x400 team of Andrew Galvin, Sam Radke, Kellen Jacobson and John Harris, with a time of 3:35.87; the girls' distance medley team of Brea Slaybaugh, Jessica Mathes, Jayde Boyle and Brianna Mathes, with a reading of 4:48.84; and the boys' shuttle hurdle relay team of Tyson Thoreson, Collin Bubke, Kellen Jacobson and Jared Schlinz, who were edged out for first, as they ran a time of 1:01.56.
