Benson's 74 leads the way for the Braves

ORANGE CITY - Led by third medalist Brock Benson, the Cherokee Braves golf team notched a third-place finish at the May 12th Class 2A Sectional at Landsmeer Golf Course here.

Host Orange City Unity Christian won the team title after carding a 309, followed by South O'Brien 312, Cherokee 317, Maple Valley/Anthon-Oto 319, Siooux Center 320, Hull Western Christian 330, West Sioux 344, and Battle Creek-Ida Grove 358.

Benson shot a 74 for the Braves to finish third in the medalist race with winner Neil Malenke of Unity Christian carding a 71, and South O'Brien's Heath Brown shooting 73 for runner-up honors. Benson beat Jared Boyer of MVAO in a one-hole playoff after Boyer also shot 74.

Other top scorers for Cherokee were Scott Brown 79, Matt Pitts 81, and David Cook 83. Also for the Braves, Andy Braun shot 88, and Paxton O'Connor 93.

The Braves, along with Unity Christian and South O'Brien, advance to the 2A Boys District Golf Meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge on Friday, starting at 11 a.m.

"Once again, the boys realized the value of mental toughness," said Cherokee coach James DeVos, a scratch golfer in his own right. "The weather (cold, windy) was a factor, but keeping in form, they persevered and put together some nice rounds.

"Brock continued his awesome play this year and Scott fought back after a rough start to shoot 79. I always tell these guys that you can never give up, no matter how bad the game is going, because you can always birdie that next hole to right the ship.

"We are looking forward to the District Meet again this year. Last year we didn't fare so well there, and the guys want to prove they belong at this level and why Cherokee has been there the last two years."
