GALVA - The Galva-Holstein softball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with an exciting 4-3 win over Spalding Catholic here on May 20.
Both defenses made several good plays and both pitchers threw well in the game, which was won by the home team in the bottom of the 7th inning.
Lady Pirate pitcher Jaime Christensen "was around the plate all night," said coach Scott Phelps, "and her defense made some fine plays behind her." Christensen gave up just two hits, walked two, and registered eight strikeouts in picking up the win.
Lindsey Joslin led G-H hitters with a 2-4 plate performance, including a double and 2 RBI. Sister Heather Joslin was 2-3 with two doubles and drove in the winning run. Kara Slaybaugh also stroked a double for the Lady Pirates.
Coach Phelps was happy with his team's effort, and especially with the compusure they showed in crucial situations, continuing to battle with every pitch. He termed the game a "good team effort up and down the lineup, as 8 of 9 starters had hits."
G-H played Schaller-Crestland tonight at Galva.
The Lady Pirates' initial win this season came by way of a forfeit, as Whiting had only four girls come out for the sport this summer, and had to cancel their season.
