Late heroics in both games have Cherokee 2-0
The Cherokee Washington High softball team got off to a great start for the 2008 season, claiming two, narrow, hard-fought road victories at Hull Western Christian and at Pocahontas.
Cherokee nicked HWC 4-3 on May 22, and overcame a tough Pocahontas team 6-5 on May 23.
At Hull, the teams were tied at 3-3 after the regulation seven innings and Cherokee started the 8th inning off with courtesy runner Sara Ruele at second base. Shauna Drefke led off the inning with a single to score Ruehle for what would be the winning run, after Drefke struck out two of three Wolfpack hitters in the bottom of the 8th to end the game.
Kelsey Peterson initiated a two-run first inning for Cherokee by leading off with a stand-up double off the fence. Peterson had two hits and a run scored in the game, while Kelsey Essick had two hits and an RBI. Drefke and Jesselyn Racine also stroked hits for the winners.
Drefke was the winning pitcher, allowing two runs on six hits, with eight strikeouts in eight innings of work.
Against Pocahontas, Peterson led off the game with a home run to help Cherokee stake out a 3-0 lead. However, the Maidens tallied three runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, and two more in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.
In the top of the 7th, Cherokee scored three runs to take a 6-5 lead. After Pocahontas put runners on first and second, Cherokee's second baseman Racine recorded the final three put-outs to end the threat and the game.
Lynn Carlson homered for the winners in the third frame. Also for Cherokee, Drefke had three hits, Peterson two with two runs scored and an RBI, Alanna Valentine one hit with a run scored and RBI, and Clare Tuttle one hit.
Drefke got the mound win, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out three in seven innings of work.
