PAULLINA - Visiting Remsen-Union tallied four runs in the top of the 8th inning to sneak away with a hard-earned 5-4 victory over South O'Brien in softball action here last week.
The teams were tied at 1-1 after seven innings, before R-U scored four runs in its half of the 8th. The Wolverines scored three in the bottom of the last inning to come up just one run short.
Aphton Roberts took the hard-luck loss for the hosts, allowing three earned runs on five hits, while striking out a whopping 14 Rocket batters.
Taylor Julian led the SOS batters with three hits in five trips and one RBI, Ashton Lansink was 2-2 with two runs scored, and Miranda Kelleher and Christine Haden each had two hits.
"This was a disappointing loss," said SOS coach Mary Helfter. "R-U is a good team and this was a good challenge for us to open the season. We stranded too many runners (13) by not being able to string together enough hits in the early innings. We need to be more optimistic. I think we'll learn from this loss."
The busy South O'Brien girls played at Hinton on May 28th, hosted Akron-Westfield May 29th, and competed in the Sheldon Tournament May 30th and 31st.
