SHELDON - After being rained out Friday, the Galva-Holstein girls played in the Sheldon softball tournament on Saturday May 31, but the going was rough for the Lady Pirates.
G-H was defeated by West Sioux 11-7 in their opening game, then dropped a 12-3 decision to host Sheldon. The two losses dropped the Lady Pirates' season mark to 2-5.
Against West Sioux, G-H came out strong to start the game, jumping to a
5-1 lead "before the wheels started to fall off," in the words of coach Scott Phelps.
Leading the way at the plate for the Lady Pirates were Brea Slaybaugh, who went 3-4 with an RBI and a double; Heather Joslin, 3-4 with 2 RBI; and Kara Slaybaugh, who went 2-3 with a double and 2 RBI. Jaime Christensen took the loss on the mound, giving up 5 hits on 3 earned runs, with 7 K's and no walks.
Against Sheldon, Galva-Holstein's leading hitters were Heather Joslin, who was 2-2 with an RBI; Lindsey Joslin, 2-4 with a double; and Brittney Ridder. who was 1-2 with a triple and 2 RBI. Taking the loss on the mound for G-H was Michaela Else, who went 4 innings and gave up 5 runs on 5 hits, and no earned runs. Also pitching for G-H was Jaime Christensen, who threw 2 innings and gave up 7 runs (3 earned). Christensen gave up 4 hits, struck out 2, and walked no one.
Coach Phelps was happy with the way the bats came alive in both games, but said the team still needs to work on making the plays in the field.
