Attendance good at Rodeo

Despite a rainy start,the overall attendance for the three days of the 42nd annual PRCA Rodeo was about the same as last year, according to Joni DeVos, executive director of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce.

"Saturday was a beautiful day. The stores in town had good traffic," she said,

On Thursday, when it rained heavily, there were only 494 audience members. On Friday, there was a good crowd of 1,610 spectators. On Saturday there was a great crowd of 2,303 spectators.

Candy for kids - Candy thrown from floats was a popular feature for kids at the Cherokee Rodeo Parade Saturday May 31.
This adds up to an impressive total attendance of 4,307.

The rodeo winners have been announced. Money won at the Cherokee PRCA Rodeo count towards qualifying points for the National Finals Rodeo, the Great Lakes Circuit Finals, the Badlands Circuit Finals, and the new Heartland Pro Rodeo Finals.

J.B. Lord, Piedmont, S.D, was the all round winner. He won $1,057.25 placing in the steer wrestling and team roping.

Joe Wilson, Kyle, S.D. won $1,191.30 riding N5 Dodge Hills for 81 points for first place in the bareback riding. 2/3 split by Dustin Reeves, Owanka, S.D. on 1D6 Cottonwood and Zach Curan, Arvada, Colo. on 2Y2. Scott Montague, Rapid City, S.D. (NFR qualifier) split 2/3 on S7 Bent Spoon with Heath Ford, Greeley, C\olo. (NFR qualifier) on 2B7 Young Again.

The saddle bronc riding was won on D8 Cat Power ridden by Chuck Schmidt, Keldron, S.D. with a total score of 83 winning $1,457.77. 2nd place in the bronc riding was won by Zach West, Phillip, S.D. on A3, 3rd place Wade Sundell, Boxholm, Iowa on 4X2; 4th place Lane Stirling, Highmore, S.D. 4th place on 2J8 Double Identity. Jermiah Diffee, Smackover, Ark. was 5th on A7 Butter Crunch, 6/7 split by Sean Prater, Fulton, Mo. on1N1 Light Ballou, and Tyler Corrington, Hastings, Minn. on J2 Frankie Scott.

Mattress on parade - A walking mattress was among the more bizarre sights at this year's Cherokee PRCA Rodeo Parade.
B.J. Schumacher, Hillsboro, Wis. (the 2006 PRCA world champion bull rider & currently 3rd in the world) won the bullriding on #515 with a 85 score winning $1,583.17. Jason McClain, Lewis, Colo. won 2nd on 31l Luke. Jaron Ford, Greeley, Colo. (NFR qualifier & currently 16th in world standings) won 3rd on bull #573. 4th was won by Cole Hermanson, Manda, N.D. on #173 Red Horse. 5th Steve Antczak, Cameron, Wis. on #131 Twin Peaks. 6/7 split between Bruce Brock, Brown City, Ind. on #34 T Bar and Fred Boettcher, Rice Lake, Wis. (NFR qualifier) on #223 California Twister.

Tie down roping was won with 10.3 by Roy Alexander, Bancroft, Wis. winning $1,267.30. 2nd Jess Tierney, Hermosa, S,D. $1048.80; 3rd Adam Mueller, Rapid City, S.D.; 4th Boe Brown, Harrold, S.D.;5th Michael McPherson, Piedmont, S.D.; 6th Bill Huber, Albia, Iowa. (NFR qualifier).Todd Suhn, North Platte, Neb. (many times NFR qualifier) won the steer wrestling with a time of 4.2 winning $1225.97. 2nd Tyler Haugen, Sturgis, SD 5.5 $1,014.60. 3rd Jon Ragatz, Cassville, Wis. 5.7 $803.22. 4th Wade Taylor, Ponca, NE 6.1. 5th Travis Hancock, State Center, Iowa; 6th J.B. Lord, Piedmont, S.D..Team roping winners include 1st Jake Cripps, Gentry, AR, Justin Fox, Huntville, Ark. with 6.4 each winning $1,022.11. 2nd J.B. Lord, Matt Zancacella, Aurora, S.D.; 3rd Jay Mattson, Deadwood, S.D.; Glen Lammers, Rapid City, S.D.; 4th Clay Cowan, Highmore, S.D., Paul Griemsman, Piedmont, S.D.

Winning the WPRA barrel race with a time of 15.77 was Brenda Rechtenbaugh, Colton, S.D. $1,289.77. 2nd Amy Schimke, Wessington Springs, S.D. $1105.51. 3rd Amanda Clayman, Naylor, MO (NFR qualifier) $921.26. 4th Tammy Whyte, Eau Claire, Wis.; 5th Shari Amiotte, Ft Pierre, S.D.; 6th Jessica Routier, Montfort, Wis. 10 places paid in barrel racing. 6 paid in the other events.
