Lynn Carlson tagged a three-run home run in the fifth inning to lead the Cherokee Washington High softball team to an impressive 3-2 Lakes Conference victory over traditional Lakes power Spirit Lake here Monday night.

Carlson's blow allowed Cherokee to overcome a 2-0 lead the visiting Indians had mounted in the early going, and was one of only four hits the winners achieved over hard-throwing Spirit Lake pitcher Mary Brown.

Lacie Drennan had two of those hits for Cherokee - one a double in the gap - and was on base to score one of the runs on Carlson's tater. Kelsie Peterson had the other WHS hit and also scored on Carlson's game-winning home run.

Kelsey Ludwig got the pitching win for Cherokee, giving up two runs on six scattered hits, with four strikeouts in seven innings of work.

"We played well. The girls played a smart ballgame," said Cherokee coach Jeremy Dettmer. "Spirit Lake is a pretty good team, but Lynn's came up with the big hit at the right time. Kelsey did a great job of pitching and holding them in check, and our defense was solid all night."
