PAULLINA - The South O'Brien softball team lost a 5-0 verdict to Sioux Central in the championship game of the South O'Brien Tournament here on June 7th, after defeating Galva-Holstein 6-0 to earn the spot in the tourney finals.
The Wolverines managed just four scattered hits off hard-throwing Rebel pitcher Brooke Scharn, including singles from Ashton Lansink, Aphton Roberts, Taylor Julian, and Miranda Kelleher.
In taking the mound loss, Lansing pitched the complete game, allowing five runs on eight hits and one walk, with nine strikeouts.
"Scharn has a great fastball and we didn't catch up with it," said SOS coach Mary Helfter. "We needed to put some runs on the board and it just didn't happen."
Wolverine pitcher Aphton Roberts earned her fourth shutout of the season in the 6-0 win over Galva-Holstein in the tourney opener. She struck out 12 and walked four in firing a one-hitter at a good Pirate club.
Christine Haden led the Wolverine hitters with a 3-3 effort, including a double and three RBI. Kelleher recorded a two-run double, Lansink stroked a double and scored on a Haden single, and Carrie Egdorf had an RBI for the winners.
"All five of our runs in the third inning came with two outs," said Helfter. "Our hitters came to the plate looking determined to make something happen."
