ESTHERVILLE - The 13-1 Cherokee Braves, rated #1 in Class 2A and the defending State Champions, hammered out 19 hits for a whopping 26 runs to take an offensive donnybrook from a tough Estherville-LC team in Lakes Conference baseball action here on June 16th.
The host Midgets scored six runs in the first two innings as they got to Cherokee starter Kyle Ruehle for six runs on six hits and four walks in 2 1/3 innings. Ruehle struck out one. Winning pitcher Matt Koch relieved Ruehle and allowed three runs on three hits and two walks, with five strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings before the game was called after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
"What a crazy game this one was," said veteran Cherokee coach Scott Koch. "We really hit the ball well. Kyle (Ruehle) had an off night, but the team's offense won the game tonight."
Five Braves lit up the E-LC pitchers, with Cody Ege leading the way with a 3-5 performance with a double and triple, and four RBI. Tyler Jones was also 3-5 with three RBI and a double, Mark Johnson was 2-3 with two RBI, Ruehle 2-4 with two RBI and a double, and Tim Jones 2-3 with a double.
