Aurelia girls win in 9 innings, 17-10

Thursday, June 26, 2008

Aurelia pitcher Erin Laursen
EARLY - The Aurelia High School softball team scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to tie their game with Schaller-Crestland here on June 18th, and send the game to extra innings. The Bulldogs scored three more runs in their half of the eighth, only to see the host Wildcats tie it up again in their half of the inning.

The Bulldogs came back again in the ninth, though, this time putting the game away with seven runs, then blanking the Wildcats in the bottom of the ninth to take the exciting Northwest Conference contest by a 17-10 score.

"What an exciting game!" exclaimed Aurelia coach Jason Heeren. "I was very proud of our girls. They could have folded twice. Our entire offense contributed to the 17 runs. Everyone was on base, and everyone scored at some point in the ball game.

"Defensively, we worked out of some tough jams. They had the winning run in scoring position in the eighth and we got out of it."

Winning Pitcher Erin Laursen pitched the entire nine innings, allowing 10 runs on eight hits. The sophomore hurler also struck out 10 and walked four.

Laursen helped her own cause at the plate, going 3 for 6 with three runs scored and three RBI. Audrey Winterhof was also 3 for 6, with two runs scored and two RBI, and Leah Kai and Kristun Tabler had two hits apiece, while Courtney Bruce, Heather Ballantyne, and Amanda Felten each had one hit.
