Funeral services were held June 27 at the Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Gregg Johnson officiated. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cherokee. Military Honors were provided by the V.F.W. L.A. Wescott Post #2253 of Cherokee.
Robert was born on Aug. 10, 1931 in Pisgah, to Guy and Hazel (Thorson) Heistand. He attended school in Dunlap, graduating in 1949. Following high school, he entered the United States Air Force and worked as a mechanic. On Dec. 1, 1955, Robert married Mattie Dean in La Grange, Georgia.
Robert then worked for Wilson Foods in Omaha, Neb. for 20 years, and liked to do auto body repair on the side while working in Council Bluffs. In 1976, he transferred to Wilson Foods in Cherokee, where he retired in 1995. After his retirement, Robert liked to make wishing wells and flower pots. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially spending time with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Robert Eugene in 1960; a grandson, Donny Wood; two brothers, Leo and Gerald; and two sisters, Marva and Leanna.
He is survived by his wife, Mattie; four daughters, Julie Rudisill and her husband, Trapper, of Cherokee; Vivian Gerber and her husband, David, of Stoughton, Wis.; Linda Waugh and her husband, John, of Council Bluffs and Christine Kirsch and her husband, Charles, of Sioux Falls, S.D; and a son, Tim Heistand and his partner, Brad Butterworth, of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters, Helen Craft of Logan, and Delores Schrom of Enon, Ohio; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
