The South O'Brien Wolverines topped Unity Christian, 5 -2, in first round Regional Softball Tournament play on July 9th. The win put South O'Brien's season mark at 20 - 9, and advanced them to a Regional quarterfinal contest against perennial state power Akron - Westfield Saturday on the Westerners' home field in Akron.
The Wolverines collected 12 hits against Unity,with Christine Haden leading the way with a 3 for 4 night; Miranda Kelleher and Faith Wittrock had two hits apiece.
South O'Brien coach Mary Helfter said the team's earning their 20th victory of the season was "another big accomplishment for this group."
On July 12th at Akron, A-W won the coin toss and elected to be the "visitors." They then proceeded to pound out 18 hits in the game, including five in the top of the 7th inning, which plated five runs and produced the final 14 - 1 win for the third-ranked Westerners.
Carrie Egdorf led SOS hitters with two hits, and Aphton Roberts pitched all seven innings for the Wolverines, striking out five hitters and walking two.
The loss ends the Wolverines' season with a record of 20 wins and 10 losses. They were 13- 5 in War Eagle Conference play.
Coach Helfter said "It's been a great season, and I've enjoyed working with a fine group of young ladies. Many positives occurred this year, and they all deserve to celebrate."
