6 Braves first-team All-Lakes

Jones, Ege, Schuett unanimous picks

Five Cherokee Braves, including three unanimous picks, have earned first-team honors on the 2008 All-Lakes Conference Teams announced last week.

Heading those selections are unanimous picks, sophomore pitcher/first baseman Cody Ege, junior catcher/pitcher Tyler Jones, and junior outfielder Kyle Schuett. Also earning first-team honors for the Braves were junior shortstop/pitcher Matt Koch, and senior utility player Kyle Ruehle, who pitches and plays second base for the Lakes Conference champions.

In addition, Cherokee senior Tim Jones was named to the second team as a utility player. Jones is the Braves designated hitter.

Ege posted a 7-0 Lakes Conference pitching record with a 1.20 ERA and 46 strikeouts in 41 innings. Jones batted .400, Koch .410, Shuett .440, and Ruehle .397 in conference play. Tim Jones batted .400.

Other first-team All-Lakes selections were Matt Gruhlke and Keith Fandel of Estherville-LC; Adam Hasselquist, Aaron Fisher, and Tyler Candor of Le Mars; Greg Anderson, Austin Peterson, and Chris Lensing of Spencer; Taylor Zeutenhorst of Sheldon; Ryan Wuebker of Emmetsburg; and Ethan Carlson of Spirit Lake.

Lensing, Carlson, and Candor also were unanimous first-team picks.

Cherokee won the 2008 Lakes Conference with a perfect 16-0 record and a 26-1 mark in regular season.

Le Mars was second with an 11-5 league slate and 17-13 overall mark, followed by E-LC 10-6 and 20-11, Spencer 9-7 and 12-16, Storm Lake 8-8 and 21-9, Emmetsburg 8-8 and 16-12, Sheldon 6-10 and 16-12, Hull Western Christian 3-13 and 6-21, and Spirit Lake 1-15 and 5-21.

Cherokee also won the Lakes Conference JV title with a 12-4 record and a 15-4 overall mark.

Spencer's JV finished 11-2-1, Le Mars 11-3-3, HWC 8-5-1, Sheldon 8-6-2, E-LC 7-8, Storm Lake 6-6-2, Spirit Lake 6-8-2, and Emmetsburg 4-12.
