Cherokee County's 12th annual American Cancer Society Relay For Life is scheduled for Friday and Saturday, August 1-2 at Koser-Spring Lake Park in Cherokee.

The popular and poignant opening ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. Friday, August 1, at the main open shelter house. Participants are asked to be present by 6:45 p.m.

A Community Barbeque featuring beef burgers, chips, and drink will be served from 5-7 p.m. Friday, August 1.

The emotional luminary ceremony will begin at dusk and as the luminarias are lit the names of survivors and those lost to cancer are read aloud. The luminarias will remain lit throughout the night along the walking path as the teams walk the route for the pledges they have received in this vital ACS fund-raising activity.

All proceeds of the Relay For Life and from the sale of the luminarias go to the ACS to be used for research, education, advocacy, and patient services.

A clip-and-save Relay For Life Luminary Order Form has been running periodically in the Chronicle Times and will continue up to the date of the event.

Those wishing to donate to the cause can make checks to the American Cancer Society and mail to Myla Stoneking, 1608 Susan Ave., Cherokee, Iowa 51012.
