Feeling Lucky? If you answered 'yes,' you won't want to miss out on the event taking place Saturday night, August 16, at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds.
This year's raffle portion of the "Rock the Block To Cure Cystic Fibrosis" event promises to be bigger and better than ever. Participants will have a chance to win great items like a Nintendo Wii, a beautiful handmade quilt, an RJ Thomas picnic table, or an IPOD. There also are several sporting event trip packages, as well as autographed memorabilia on the prize list, and fun family get-aways as well.
Like to dine out? You're in luck, too. The prize roster is loaded with gift certificates from all of your favorite local dining spots, as well as items from local merchants, far too numerous to list. The fact is, there truly is something that everyone can get excited about on this year's raffle. The raffle will be located in the commercial building and will close promptly at 9 p.m. All winners will be posted at 10 p.m. Winners need not be present to win.
The raffle however, is just one area of the evening that participants will enjoy. Beginning at 5 p.m. also, an assortment of classic cars from the tri-state area will cruise into the fairgrounds for a Shine & Show, followed by a 7 p.m. scoop of the Cherokee loop.
Also at 5 p.m. the Cherokee County Pork Producers will begin their delicious pork loin grill-out. Garlic Butter Pork Loin sandwiches, choice of vegetable, cheesy hash browns and ice cream are on the menu this year. Drinks are included with the meal, priced at $6 per adult, and kids may choose a hotdog meal for $3. The meal area will serve until 8 p.m.
The entertainment rolls onto the stage beginning at 9 p.m. Playing this year is a remarkable group out of Omaha, called the Fish Heads. Strange name- fantastic show! The Fish Heads are becoming a well known RAGBRAI band, and you may have heard them play in the Lakes region, also. They play popular music with their own original island style. The outdoor pavilion will be decked out in tropical theme including a tiki bar beer island, lanterns & palm trees. The band will play until 1 a.m. There is no gate fee this year, so all are free to come out and give them a listen.
A wide assortment of food & drink will be available in the concession stand throughout the entire night. From pizza, to walking tacos, to cotton candy - you'll find it here.
Rock the Block, named for its beginnings as a street dance downtown Cherokee four years ago, has become a fun-filled event that many in the county look forward to. Yet there is a bigger and much more serious cause behind the party atmosphere. Thanks to generous family, friends, and business sponsors, 100% of the proceeds each year at Rock the Block are passed along to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
Cystic Fibrosis, or CF is a life threatening disease which alters the function of the lungs, digestive system & pancreas of more than 30,000 children & young adults across the nation. Ongoing research and development of drugs and therapies are dependant upon events such as this. Our county has several children with CF and they will benefit directly from medical and scientific advances which are made each day. While the goal is a true cure, those who live with the disease understand the value of modern treatments which are available for CF today; therapies which did not exist even ten years ago, but were made possible due to the rapid advancement of technology. To learn more about CF, please visit www.CFF.org.
With this cause in mind, each year, a committee of driven and dedicated moms pulls together throughout the summer to plan Rock the Block. With some much appreciated help from their husbands & families, this year's committee members include co-chairs Lisa Vandelune & Carrie Lux, as well as Rebecca Brunsting, Pam Cox, Carey Ducommun, Paula Hoy, Jill Johnston, Amber Messerole, Penny Pingrey, Korrie Waldner, and LynnRochelle Williams. Add the power of another fifty or better volunteers, and you have the Rock the Block crew. They are looking forward to watching all of their hard work pay off through this fantastic end of summer celebration and counting on seeing many of you there!
